What is an ATS score, really?

Resume checkers give you a number out of 100, and different checkers give the same resume very different numbers. Here's what's actually going on, and what's worth improving.

Most ATS don't score you at all

Systems such as Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, Taleo and iCIMS mainly store your resume, split it into fields and let recruiters search it. Some can rank applicants against a job, but most screening is a recruiter searching for skills and reading what comes up.

So an “ATS score” from a resume tool is that tool's own measure, not a number any employer sees.

What a good score should measure

Why checkers disagree

Each tool picks its own checks and weights. Some score only keyword overlap with one job post, others mainly formatting. That's why Offerline shows every check behind its score, so you can see exactly what earned or lost points.

Frequently asked questions

What's a good ATS score?

On Offerline, 85+ means the resume is well structured with strong, quantified bullets. More important is a keyword match of around 70% for each specific job.

Why did another site give me a lower score?

Different tools measure different things, often keyword overlap with one job. Neither is “the” score; use them to find concrete fixes.
